English Use On Campus
From Info
- We value diversity, including multilingualism, at CAJ and recognize that for many of our students, English is not the primary language of use.
- Because the academic language of CAJ is English, students are asked to use English in the classroom and during school activities as much as possible; however, outside of these settings, the use of any other language in appropriate ways to communicate is not forbidden on campus.
- English should be used as the medium of instruction for all but Japanese and World language classes.
- English should be used as the medium of instruction for coaching, co-curricular activities and school events.
- English should be used as the medium of communication between students in class, sports, and organized school activities.
- Students who are not fluent in English are encouraged to use English socially as much as possible to enhance their English acquisition. This is especially important in elementary school.
- At the same time, we also value Caring and Collaboration, so any language should not be used as a means to exclude others.
- Great care will be taken to validate a student's native language and culture. Whenever possible, and unless there is disrespect involved, positive reinforcement rather than punishment will be used to encourage English use.
