Christian Academy in Japan (CAJ) seeks a new head of school, effective August 2022. The new school head will have the exciting opportunity to build on a 72-year heritage of providing Christ-centered education in Japan to equip students to serve Japan and the world for Christ.

Position[edit]

On behalf of the Board of Directors and within the framework of policy governance, the head of school ensures that:

  • CAJ students are equipped to honor Christ and impact the world for Him, in part by achieving the student objectives.
  • CAJ provides an exemplary, sustainable, Bible-based educational program.
  • CAJ has an organizational culture which reflects board-approved values (faithfulness, caring, collaboration, diversity, excellence, and stewardship) and is aware of and responsive to demographic trends.
  • CAJ employs qualified Christian staff working to achieve board ends.
  • CAJ uses sound financial practice.
  • CAJ has an attractive, safe, well-maintained facility that enhances student learning.

Further, the head of school:

  • Ensures the school operates within board policy executive limitations.
  • Serves as the board's only link to operational achievement and conduct, so that all authority and accountability of staff, as far as the board is concerned, is considered the authority and accountability of the head of school.
  • Uses a model of distributed leadership when working with other administrators on the Leadership Team. A team leadership model is ensured by board policy.

The head of school will meet the following expectations:

  • Inspire students and staff to deeper Christian faith and living by modeling a Christ-like lifestyle.
  • Wholeheartedly advance CAJ's mission and implement board policy.
  • Ensure students are instructed from a Christian perspective using a biblical worldview.
  • Strive for school-wide excellence in all areas.
  • Demonstrate continuous professional growth based on school-wide goals as well as individual goals identified in cooperation with the board.
  • Serve as primary channel of communication between the board and staff/school community.
  • Serve as a member and an advisor to the board, and as an ex officio member of board committees.
  • Promote accountability structures throughout the school.
  • Work collaboratively with a leadership team.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the board.


Qualifications[edit]

The head of school will meet the following qualifications:

  • Born-again Christian who models a Christ-like lifestyle
  • Emotional maturity and good judgment
  • Positive interpersonal relationships
  • Clearly-articulated philosophy of Christian education
  • Wholehearted commitment to CAJ's vision: equipping students to serve Japan and the world for Christ, mission, beliefs, and philosophy
  • Active participation in a local church doctrinally compatible with CAJ's Statement of Faith
  • Wholehearted commitment to abide by and implement board policy
  • Support for policy governance system
  • Support for the missionary effort in Japan
  • Able to deal with the different constituencies of CAJ
  • Qualifications necessary for employment as a principal at CAJ:
    • Masters degree
    • Five years or more of classroom experience
    • Appropriate certification
  • Administrative experience in education (principal experience preferred)
  • Understanding of, a heart for, and experience with, servant leadership
  • Fulfillment of Japanese government requirements for employment

Profile[edit]

Christian Academy in Japan is a K-12 school established in 1950 to provide Christ- centered education to the children of evangelical missionaries. While continuing in this purpose, CAJ also serves other families who desire this type of education for their children. We serve more than 430 students from over 30 countries in our day school program and more than 250 additional students in our School Support Services program. Our accredited program is communicated in English and uses an American-style approach.

  • Elementary school students concentrate on Bible, language arts, social studies, math, and science. They also receive instruction from specialists in art, choral and instrumental music, Japanese language, physical education, library skills, and computer applications.
  • Middle school students explore their potential through courses in home economics, industrial arts, computer applications, art, choral and instrumental music, and world languages (Japanese and Spanish), in addition to a strong program in core academics.
  • The high school curriculum offers 8 semesters of English, social studies, mathematics, science, and Japanese; 6 semesters of Spanish; and 4 semesters of Bible and physical education. Additional courses are available in art, design, digital technology, home economics, and music. Advanced Placement courses are offered in art, English, foreign language, math, science, and social studies.
  • School Support Services (SSS) provides educational resources, consultancy , achievement testing, and special events for English-speaking families across Japan that homeschool or supplement Japanese schools with home tutoring in English. SSS also shares expertise and resources with other Christian schools through the Affiliated Schools Program.


Accreditation and School Improvement[edit]

CAJ has been accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges since 1976. The current school improvement plan focuses on further developing the curriculum, increasing child safety, reassessing the student objectives and further developing the resource master plan.
